Why LeBron, NOT Anthony Davis, Is The Key To The Lakers Beating The Rockets

September 4, 2020

The Lakers take on the Rockets tonight in an epic showdown of athleticism between two powerhouse teams. Both rosters are riddled with talent, but it's the ultimate clash of styles.

On Thursday's episode of Laker Film Room, the squad discussed how this series will come down to how successfully Los Angeles uses their resources. Although many think this will be Anthony Davis' time to shine given his size advantage- Pete Zayas and Darius Soriano argue it'll be up to a veteran LeBron to push the series's pace and impose his strength on the court.

"When you're talking about the ways in which the Lakers can effectively utilize their size and not get baited into doing things that Houston wants you to do - the way you do that is by punishing them with LeBron James," Darius said. (28:20)

The key difference between the Lakers duo is the simple fact that LeBron has the skill to attack from any place on the court in any given matchup. Despite AD's build, he doesn't have the complete capability to shut down a strong Rockets approach from marquee players like Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

Although Houston has the speed to keep up with a quick L.A. roster, it's a true David v. Goliath matchup when it comes to size. The physical difference between these teams automatically creates a disadvantage for the Rockets - who will need to out-execute throughout the game to compete with the Lakers "thundering herd" attack.

In the words of Pete: "If we're gonna win this series, we're gonna look like a conquering army while doing it." (11:40).

At the end of the day, Houston may in fact have a problem if LeBron and his team exploit the competitive and physical edge they continue to have over their opponents.
