Is Jimmy G to Blame for the 49ers Week One Performance?

September 14, 2020

The San Francisco 49ers had a less than appealing performance in yesterday's home opener against the Arizona Cardinals. After leading the majority of the game, the 49ers couldn't capitalize on any opportunity in the fourth to come away with a win as they fell to a conference rival, 24-20.

On today's episode of Striking Gold, Rob Lowder and Eric Crocker were joined by Blue Wire's own Kevin Jones to dissect where it all went wrong for the Bay-Area team. Although there were many notable mistakes throughout the game, Kevin cited a timid QB in Jimmy Garoppolo as the potential the source of the problem.

"It felt like [Garoppolo] was playing scared like he didn't want to throw an interception like he didn't want to make too quick of a decision," Kevin said. (13:42).

The guys pointed out that his pass game was riddled with late and high throws that made it almost impossible for any of his targets to catch. San Fran had two golden opportunities late in the fourth to seal the deal, but an indecisive Jimmy G found his key receivers in Kendrick Bourne and Trent Taylor too late to produce a game-winning touchdown.

The group certainly didn't pin it all on Garoppolo's performance as his lack of rhythm in the six year-vet was one of many offensive factors that led to the 49er's self-inflicted loss. However, when it came time to produce, Garoppolo not getting it done was a disappointment.

Plain and simple, the team didn't look like the offensive unit we saw just months ago on the biggest stage in professional sports. It'll be interesting to see whether the "Super Bowl Hangover" will wear off for a 49ers team that will need to shake off some of the cobwebs for next week’s game.

*Striking Gold will be upping their game this season and will be discussing everything 49ers at least three times a week. The shows will include game reactions, a weekly mailbag, and game previews from the squad.
