What Should The Warriors Do With The No. 2 Pick? Light Years Weighs In

September 8, 2020

With the NBA Draft just over a month away, the Golden State Warriors find themselves in an unusual position with the number two overall pick. Unlike most teams picking at that spot, Golden State looking to make a move that can help them win right now, rather than trying to find a future cornerstone for the franchise.

With a still very loaded roster that features stars like guards Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, general manager Bob Meyers may opt to make a move that involves them trading their pick. On the latest episode of the Light Years podcast, hosts Saam Esfandiari and Andy Liu talked with Sam Vecenie, NBA Draft reporter for The Athletic, on what the Warriors trading their highest draft pick since 2012 might look like in this draft.

Vecenie believes that one option that makes the most sense for the Warriors would be to trade down with the Hornets to fill a roster need with an established veteran, while still being able to get a top three pick.

“Essentially, do like number two for Cody Zeller and number three,” Vecenie said. “Just getting their center taken care of for next year, a great screener who would work really well with Klay and Steph Curry.”

Zeller would fulfill the Warriors need for a big man to round out their starting lineup, and the Hornets position at number three still gives the Warriors a chance to draft a player who can be a piece they rely on in the future.

While perhaps a trade may be the safest option for the Warriors, there is still the option to use their number two pick straight up. According to Liu, the prospect he sees fans wanting the most is Memphis center James Wiseman.

“He is the player we get the most comments about, just in terms of Warriors fans, and it’s for the obvious reason they have a starting point guard, shooting guard, power forward whatever, and then secondarily he just has elite physical measurements and you’re just like ‘oh wow that’s a very athletic giant human,’” Liu said.

Vecenie actually spoke with Wiseman to get a feel for his personality and what he thinks of his own game.

“He told me he saw himself as more of a Giannis or an Anthony Davis who could create from like the mid-post,” Vecenie said.

While Vecenie doesn’t necessarily believe that Wiseman will be able to match the offensive talent of players like that, he does like Wiseman’s abilities when close to the rim.

“It seems like he’s gotten better, that he’s going into more accentuating his play finishing abilities. I think of him as more of a finisher who is going to be a great rim protector,” Vecenie said.
