Now That Billy Donovan Is Out In OKC, Is Chris Paul Next?

September 9, 2020

Following the Oklahoma City Thunder's playoff exit against the Rockets last week, rumors have been flying around about the potential of a total rebuild for the team. Now that head coach Billy Donovan and the franchise mutually parted ways, everyone is wondering if Chris Paul could be next out the door.

In Tuesday’s episode of The Uncontested, Jared and Tayler dive into the conspiracy surrounding CP3’s next step - and whether his time with the Thunder has come to an end. What started the squad’s suspicion was a tweet from New York Times reporter, Marc Stein, in which he inferred that there had already been interest circulating about the 15-year vet.

Pair that tweet with CP3’s suspicious heartfelt video in which he thanks OKC fans for their support and a sudden departure from the head coach, and we’re off to the races on anticipated speculation.

“Chris Paul basically having that goodbye message to OKC, which is really what it felt like, it wasn’t so much a ‘Thank you for the season, see you next year’. It was very much a goodbye.” Tayler said. (9:58).

Although Paul is guaranteed a full $41.4 million for the 2020-21 season, trading him would enable a complete reconstruction for the team out of Oklahoma. In light of a “financially unsure” year that the upcoming season may bring, it doesn’t come as a surprise that general managers like OKC’s Sam Presti may be looking for ways to bottom out and start from the ground up.

After all, the NBA’s four-month break gave those in charge the perfect opportunity to go back to the drawing board.

“I think those GM’s were talking and exploring possible deals and poking around and seeing what other teams were thinking. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s already a framework for a Chris Paul to Milwaukee deal, a Chris Paul to Philadelphia deal.” Jared said (9:25).

This is just the beginning of the trade whirlwind that will entrap us all until the beginning of next season - and while none of us know the implications of that, OKC fans may want to start preparing themselves to see a new group of young players rep the Blue and Orange.
